The Geek Beat Talks to Jewel Staite

posted Monday, July 30th, 2007, by Andy Gore

At last week’s Comic-Con, yours truly had the unbelievable good luck to interview Jewel Staite about her new role as Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate: Atlantis. Jewel talks about what it’s like being the new kid on Atlantis, compares Dr. Keller to her favorite role, Kaylee on Firefly/Serenity, and comments on how much she hates doing “doctor babble.”

Note: Special thanks to the Done The Impossible folks for acting as my impromptu video crew when the originally scheduled group press conference was switched to one-on-one meetings at the last minute. Thanks also to Brian Wiser for alerting me to the switch and filling in as my sound guy.

Battlestar Simpsons

Dylan Meconis Battlestar Galactisimpsons is freakin' awesome. So say we all!

This artist deserves – something. I’m not sure what. A prize? A job? Extensive therapy? Her ability to emulate Matt Groening’s drawing style is eclipsed only by her ability to capture The Simpsons writers’ classic wit (back when The Simpsons was, you know, funny.)

The only problem having seen these is I now need Groening to make a Battlestar Galactica-themed episode. Wait, scratch that. Sci Fi Channel needs to make a new mini-series, only in cartoon form! Mmmmm…. animated….

Dylan Meconis’ (do check out her other works; she’s got style) Battlestar homage reminded me of another franchise-bending effort of a few years ago – this time mixing up Joss Whedon’s Firefly and South Park. Lux Lucre hasn’t updated his South Park Firefly page in ages, but I still get a chuckle out of Jayne Cobb as Cartman. Respect my chain ‘o command, gorrammit!

Super Bowl XLI Ad #29: Ford F-Series Super Duty

I don’t like trucks and I like big trucks even less. But this slickly done Ford commercial almost had me interested in an F-Series Super Duty. Almost.

Really nice special effects get this truck commercial a 9 on the Geek-o-Meter.

Super Bowl XLI Ad #28: Emerald Nuts Robert Goulet

Robert Goulet drops from the ceiling a la Mission Impossible and messes up your workspace if you’re not noshing on nuts. Very bizarre, and a whole new take on the romantic crooner. This gets an 8 on the Geek-o-Meter. It takes guts to be this weird.

Super Bowl XLI Ad #27: Acura Dreamer

This Acura commercial gets a nod if only because its got a nice concept, well-executed; no gimmicks, but nice visuals. And how smart is it for a car company to link its brand to innovation? A definite 9 on the Geek-o-Meter.
