Bunnygate 2007: eBayers Selling Open Edition Mimzy as Limited Edition

posted Sunday, July 29th, 2007, by Andy Gore
eBay buyers beware: These fine plush replicas of the titular bunny from The Last Mimzy are both made by the Tonner Doll Company, but only the rabbit on the left is the limited edition, sold-out screen-accurate version.

Those in the know are aware that the Tonner Doll Company makes some of the most insanely detailed, beautifully crafted, cherished childhood friends. Their licensed dolls, based on such entertainment franchises as Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and DC Comics, are sought after by collectors everywhere and often go for top dollar.

So it comes as no surprise that Tonner’s latest hot property – the limited edition replica of the adorable Mimzy plush bunny from the movie The Last Mimzy, which retails for $59.99, has been selling on eBay for well over $150 a pop. After all, the doll has been limited to only 500 pieces and was sold out almost the moment it was announced. (more…)

Battlestar Simpsons

Dylan Meconis Battlestar Galactisimpsons is freakin' awesome. So say we all!

This artist deserves – something. I’m not sure what. A prize? A job? Extensive therapy? Her ability to emulate Matt Groening’s drawing style is eclipsed only by her ability to capture The Simpsons writers’ classic wit (back when The Simpsons was, you know, funny.)

The only problem having seen these is I now need Groening to make a Battlestar Galactica-themed episode. Wait, scratch that. Sci Fi Channel needs to make a new mini-series, only in cartoon form! Mmmmm…. animated….

Dylan Meconis’ (do check out her other works; she’s got style) Battlestar homage reminded me of another franchise-bending effort of a few years ago – this time mixing up Joss Whedon’s Firefly and South Park. Lux Lucre hasn’t updated his South Park Firefly page in ages, but I still get a chuckle out of Jayne Cobb as Cartman. Respect my chain ‘o command, gorrammit!

American Otaku, Part 1: Getting There Is 3.14159 the Fun

Jason here, reflecting on my recent pilgrimage to the land of rare non-album tracks tacked onto the end of CDs and Ebi Filets at McDonalds. I’m talking about Japan, of course; the land that birthed otaku (otaku is Japanese for geek.)

My reasons for making the trip were many: My wife and I were taking our belated honeymoon, now that we’ve moved into our new house. We’ve both been yearning for some exotic travel while we’re still childless and relatively free to go and do as we please. I’ve always wanted to explore Japan – blame it on everything from too many hours watching Battle of the Planets to a more recent obsession with Maschinen Krieger, a hobby virtually unknown outside of Japan (more on Maschinen Krieger in Part 3.)
