Serenity pre-CGI concept drawing
Tim Earls, Lead Set Designer, Serenity; Illustrator, Firefly

This early pre-production sketch of our favorite boat was drawn to help ZOIC visualize the CGI model of Serenity for Firefly (the tv series.) Notice that most of the industrial design was already in place even at this early stage.

A side and top view of the Reaver attack ship from the pilot episode of Firefly. These drawings were used by ZOIC to do the CGI model of the Reaver vessel.

Reaver vessel pre-CGI concept drawing (3/4 view)
Tim Earls, Lead Set Designer, Serenity; Illustrator, Firefly

Finally, we get to see our Reaver ship in action! This three-quarter “realized” view of the ship was intended to give CGI artists a feel for how the ship might look while moving.
Serenity Bridge design drawing
Tim Earls, Lead Set Designer, Serenity; Illustrator, Firefly

A drawing of the Serenity bridge viewed from the back of the set. Tim made many “subtle” changes to the design of Serenity for the movie, including working out more realistic ship design elements like a bridge where several crew could move around in, when necessary.
