In The Works: 21 Days

posted Sunday, September 24th, 2006 by Andy Gore

Hard to believe it’s only been three weeks since we officially launched The Geek Beat. In that time we’ve had over 75,000 visitors and apparently some of you found enough of interest to keep you coming back. Go figure.

During those 21 days we published a new review or analysis story just about every day – even on the weekends. And while we may not always be able to maintain that pace, we’ll be working every spare moment to bring you the latest from the Geekdom. And hopefully what stories there are will always inform, entertain and surprise.

What Next? Of course, the important question isn’t “What have you done for me lately?” But, “What are you doing for me next?” We have some ambitious plans: A review of the new Blackberry Pearl; a shootout of inexpensive, multipurpose color laser printers; a roundup of true HD (1080p) televisions; a guide on turning your Mac Mini into an HD TiVO; the launch of Caveman movie reviews; a feature on how to give your iPod “military-grade” protection; our big year-end Best Tech Gifts show on KGO Radio; and lots, lots more.

Browncoats will be happy to know that we’re working on downloads for fans of Firefly/Serenity, starting with a series of wallpapers taken from some amazing production stills of our Big Damn Movie. If you have any suggestions for what kind of desktops you’d be interested in, please visit the Firefly/Serenity forum and let us know on the Cool Desktops string.

Speaking of forums, we’re hoping to build our community with a number of special events before year-end, including a possible contest (we’ll keep you posted on details as they develop.) And we’re still talking to a couple of folks who could swell the ranks of our crew (if you’re interested in writing for The Geek Beat, please let us know what you’d be interested in doing at the Geek Beat forum topic, New Beaters.)

Of course, while we all endeavor to bring you the news and reviews you care about, we can only do better the more we hear from you. Let us know what kind of stuff you’re interested in seeing on The Geek Beat at the Feedback forum.

I’ll end our first In The Works column by just saying, “Thanks.” A surprisingly large number of you came to check us out, but even more surprising is how many of you chose to stick around. We appreciate it and we’re going to keep working to make it worth your trouble.
