Those in the know are aware that the Tonner Doll Company makes some of the most insanely detailed, beautifully crafted, cherished childhood friends. Their licensed dolls, based on such entertainment franchises as Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and DC Comics, are sought after by collectors everywhere and often go for top dollar.

So it comes as no surprise that Tonner’s latest hot property – the limited edition replica of the adorable Mimzy plush bunny from the movie The Last Mimzy, which retails for $59.99, has been selling on eBay for well over $150 a pop. After all, the doll has been limited to only 500 pieces and was sold out almost the moment it was announced.

Only one problem – The Collector Mimzy, Tonner product number T7-MMDD-02, hasn’t shipped yet. In fact, it likely won’t ship until end of August or early September. We know this because we got the scoop straight from Tonner during this week’s Comic-Con 2007.

So what, exactly, have people been buying on eBay? Well, it turns out that Tonner also released – and is currently shipping – an open edition version of Mimzy, product number T7-MMDD-03. This Mimzy is also a very nice plush, but unlike the Collector Mimzy, isn’t entirely screen-accurate, is made of chenille (the screen-accurate version is made of a mohair blend), and retails for $24.99. And, at the risk of repeating myself, it’s an open edition: If you can’t get one now, don’t worry, Tonner will be making more.

We know many of our readers collect movie replicas, so we thought we should give you a heads-up on what some less-than-scrupulous eBayers are up to. If you’re in the market for a Mimzy, make sure you get the bunny you paid for.
