In The Works: New Server, New Software, New Look and Father’s Day

posted Monday, April 16th, 2007 by Andy Gore

Don’t you just hate blogfade? You know – just when you start to depend on a Web site, come to look forward to the writers’ razor-sharp wit and keen insight, and then all of the sudden new content evaporates like a summer shower, leaving you nothing but an archive of things past to ponder.

Yeah, we hate that, too. Good thing that’s not what’s happening here. No sir! The Geek Beat is still here, and we got plenty up our sleeves for you.

Brave New Geek Beat

I know it’s been a while since you heard from us last, and for that I sincerely apologize. Things have been, well, very busy. The whole spammer attack on our forums gave us pause, and we decided we needed to take a hard look at the software and server we’re using. When we launched this site almost a year ago, we had no idea how popular The Geek Beat would be. So we went with a content management system that was simple and flexible, but perhaps not as robust as it could be. Same thing for the forums and even our server. Now that we have a better idea who our audience is, and more importantly, how big our audience is, it’s time to move to more industrial-strength solutions.

This is also a good opportunity to reevaluate our design and architecture and make some tweaks to both. If there’s something you’d really like to see change, let us know. A server and CMS migration is a great opportunity for advancement, and we’d certainly like your input.

Who’s Your Daddy?

As for when we’re going to start posting fresh content, the answer is – now. We’ve got a bunch of things in the works, including our upcoming Father’s Day Buyer’s Guide, which will be posted here and also aired on KGO Radio San Francisco’s Pete Wilson Show, June 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We’re just polishing up our list of goodies now. And, as always, we have some great surprises in store for you.

We also have our lab test of VIZIO’s 47-inch LCD HD television completed and are just writing up the results. I think you’ll be surprised by what we found; we certainly were.

And we’re about to start a new series that’ll review and rate the best freebies for your computer. It turns out there’s lots of cool little programs you can get that do lots of useful things, from getting rid of all those temporary files that clutter up and slow down your PC to plug-ins that help manage multiple e-mail signatures.

Can’t Stop The Signal

But, before all that happens, I hope to have the first in a series articles to support a new audio segment I’ll be working on with The Signal, the premier podcast covering Joss Whedon’s Firefly and Serenity. The articles will take a detailed look at the ‘Verse and it’s technology.

So, no worries, The Geek Beat has only been on hiatus. We’ve taken stock, made plans, and will be bringing you even more excited stuff in the months to come.
